Top 5- Things to do in Maui
Who’s following me on instagram (@marthasachser) must have seen that I was in Hawaii for 20 amazing days, travelling to four out of the eight islands that make this American state so special. I visited Oahu, Maui, Hawaii (Big Island) and Kauai. And as you might have expected, I’m here to talk about what I liked the most about one of them: Maui. We were there for four days but I could have stayed there for like a week. I really like some of their attractions and decided to write a “top 5 list” of things you NEED to see if you go there. Check it out!
Old Lahaina Luau
Known as the best and most famous beach party on the island, the Old lahaina Luau is a MUST if you’re going to Maui! Facing the sea, great food and that Aloha vibe, it can’t go wrong! It’s three hours long and you don’t even notice it! Thankfully these memories will be eternalized in my pictures. There’s a small mall next to the spot where you can find crafting stores, restaurants and some place to get some rest before the luau begins. You should make a reservation before the date ‘cause you know: better safe than sorry. Their official website is THIS ONE!
Snorkeling e whale watching
Something I’ve grown to love ever since I visited Hawaii was snorkeling. I went to Hanauma Bay in Oahu and I only grew to love it more after swimming at the Black Rock Beach in Maui. The Black Rock is beach on the west coast of the island, in front of the Sheraton Hotel, one of the many resorts in that area. Now, if you want something even more complete, the famous Molokini is considered the best snorkeling place in the state. With daily tours to the small clear-watered island and tons of fish, it’s the perfect option for people who love to go snorkeling and that “I’m on vacation” vibe, since you will be on a boat. On your way there you can see whales performing their own show and some tours even offer a stop at Turtle Town, so you can find and swim close to the turtles! It’s not very cheap but it’s worth every penny. The prices vary from $80-120, you should probably check the prices before you go! I missed my chance but Debora didn’t and she took amazing pictures with my GoPro (thank you!!). there are different companies that offer the tour, but one of the most popular ones is Pride Of Maui.
Sunrise above the clouds
This was one of my favorite trips in Maui! We left the hostel at 4AM and got to the top of the Haleakala Volcano at 5:30AM. The sunrise is around 6:30AM but the sooner you get there, the better. You don’t want to miss this spectacle; we were three thousand meters high, above the clouds. The path there is full of curves and it’s usually very cold so be sure to dress up warmly!
Road to Hana
The famous road to Hana. Yeah, the one with 600 curves and tons of one way bridges! I lost track of how many waterfalls, fruit stands and banana cakes we walked past when we were there! But the highlight was definitely a food truck that sold fresh sugar cane juice! I really loved it but here’s something I regret: having done everything in just one day. That’s what most people end up doing but I thought it was a little tight and I couldn’t enjoy everything as much as I wanted to. This route to Hana should be lived and appreciated with care. In other words: if you have the day, try to stay there for at least a day and a half (they don’t have many hostels/hotels but there’s a few). It will probably be worth it. There’s a lot of tips and information about the route that wouldn’t fit this post, so check their official website clicking here. Wailea Beach
I fell in love with this beach! Clear and warm water, cool waves… it could easily be a pool! I had a perfect afternoon there and I had to recommend it to you. Different from Oahu, it’s not so easy to find such beautiful beaches on other islands in every season of the year, in the winter for example the waves can’t be extremely dangerous, respect the signs. So whenever I found a good and calm one I tried to stay there for as long as I could. We started by driving down the coast and stopping at Kalepolepo Beack Park, walking past Kalama Beach, which is, by the way, a very nice commercial center: full of restaurants and stores that sell handmade goods and good souvenirs to take home. Wailea was where we spent most of the day. I highly recommend it! The only bad thing was that there was no shade on the beach where we could sit down, at least not near us, so please don’t leave your sunscreen at home! At the end of the day we were able to go south and watch the sunset with the whales in the horizon. Just try to picture it and see what a great day we had!
