From Brazil to the Big Apple – a Neurosurgeon’s journey – with Dr. Christian Ferreira

As a Brazilian, I love learning about other fellow Brazilians who are contributing and making progress in different areas here in New York City! When I came across our interviewee I knew I had to start my series of “Brazilians in the Big Apple” with his story!

I had the joy of sitting down with Dr. Christian Ferreira and learning about his journey and busy daily life in NYC as a doctor but also as a husband and a parent to two adorable and bright girls! Keep reading to be inspired by his work ethic and dedication that made him move from a small town in Brazil to the vibrant Big Apple.

MS- How did you start your medical career?

CF- I started my journey as a neurosurgeon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After completing my residency at University Hospital Antonio Pedro from the renowned Federal Fluminense University I spent years honing my skills in neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery, managing over 1200 cases, including complex brain aneurysms and spine surgeries at Hospital Unimed Volta Redonda in the interior of Rio de Janeiro State. My passion for advancing neurosurgical techniques led me to seek new challenges and opportunities on a global scale. This quest brought me to the renowned Lenox Hill Hospital in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where I currently serve as a Clinical Neurovascular Fellow under the mentorship of Dr. David Langer.

You were already very successful in what you were doing in Brazil, what made you want to start this new chapter in NYC?

One of my key motivations for coming to the United States was to learn the cerebral bypass technique, a surgery that requires extensive training and expertise. Dr. David Langer, the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, is one of the best in the world at performing this surgery. His daily work and life struggles were featured in the Netflix docuseries “Lenox Hill” (2020) and “Emergency NYC” (2023). Learning from Dr. Langer, who is renowned as one of the best bypass surgeons in the USA, was a significant factor in my decision to come here and train under his guidance.

I remember this show, I watched in 2020 during the pandemic. His work was inspiring, that’s great that you get to work with him!

Yes, it’s such an honor! My biggest incentive to come to the United States was to contribute to the neurosurgical community with my expertise. Since joining Lenox Hill Hospital, I’ve had the privilege of working on groundbreaking research and innovative treatments. One of my most significant achievements has been my research on intra-arterial chemotherapy treatment for high-grade gliomas, a malignant tumor with lower survival rates. This pioneering study is part of clinical trials using groundbreaking technologies that could change the lives of thousands of people affected by this devastating disease. The potential to significantly improve survival rates and offer new hope to patients drives my passion for this work, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact it could have on clinical practices worldwide.

During my tenure at Hospital Unimed Volta Redonda in Brazil, I played a crucial role in pioneering stroke thrombectomy procedures. I spearheaded the implementation of a comprehensive stroke protocol, ensuring timely and specialized care for stroke patients. This initiative not only addressed the immediate needs of stroke patients but also laid the foundation for a systematic and efficient approach to stroke care within our institution. Training sessions for nurses and technicians were part of this effort, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

So many achievements, that’s great! Do you speak at medical conferences as well? I assume a lot of people would love to learn and hear from you and your experience.

Yes! Sharing knowledge is an essential part of my work. Recently, I had the honor of presenting at the “SLICE Next Frontiers 2024” conference in Montpellier, France. My lecture on the “Meta-analysis of Virtual Simulation Software for Stent Selection in Cerebral Aneurysm Treatment” captivated an international audience, highlighting the transformative potential of computational simulation in clinical decision-making. The positive reception and engaging discussions that followed underscored the significance of our findings.

In January 2024, I also participated in the “Advances in Neurotechnology Resident Academic Day” at Lenox Hill Hospital. My lecture, “Unveiling the Power of Simulation Software,” was part of an interactive academic day attended by residents, fellows, faculty, advanced care providers, medical students, and industry professionals. The event, held at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital’s Corwin Hall and Blue Room, showcased the latest neurotechnologies and provided a platform for hands-on experiences and networking.

I read that you moved to New York with your family! That’s a big change for everyone especially with small children, how was this transition?

My journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family. My wife, Paula, is an ophthalmologist who left her practice in Brazil to support my endeavors and take care of our two daughters, Isabela and Marina. Isabela, now 6 years old, started first grade and quickly learned to speak and read in English. Marina, who is 4, currently stays at home with Paula but will be joining Pre-K later this year. Their adaptation and resilience have been incredible, making our transition to life in New York City smooth and fulfilling.

Choosing a new home in a foreign country might not be the easiest thing to do, did you find a place to call home?

Yes, we did! Living in Long Island City has been a wonderful experience. The area offers a perfect balance of tranquility and vibrant city life. I enjoy the beautiful waterfront views, diverse dining options, and the convenience of being just a short subway ride away from Manhattan. It’s the ideal place to unwind after a demanding day at the hospital.

When I’m not in the hospital or at a conference, I love exploring the city’s endless attractions. Whether it’s dining at unique restaurants, enjoying cultural events, or simply strolling through Central Park, New York offers endless inspiration and excitement. It’s a city that truly never sleeps, and I’m grateful to be a part of its dynamic fabric.

Do you have any plans for the future?

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue my work in New York, collaborating with some of the brightest minds in neurosurgery. My goal is to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our field, ultimately improving patient outcomes and contributing to the rich tapestry of medical advancements that New York City is known for.
